Inhabiting The Toxic Landscape
This project is an experimental museum which uses the excess of minerals in the water of Rio Tinto as a construction material by the means of electrolysis.
The aim is to bring tourism to this highly toxic site and to create an island where people experience the toxic manifesting itself onto the structure of the museum. Using VR technology, the process of crystallisation will be augmented and fast-forwarded. In order to ‘heal’ the land, the toxic will be absorbed and shown in its natural best state.
Time plays a primary role in the project. On the one hand, it is a learning journey of the natural state of the landscape and the history of mining. on the other hand, it is a layering of experiences in time and a layering of crystals.
Ultimately, the project creates a paradox between the destruction of the natural site and the exploitation and the creation of something beautiful through time.
